三字经 Literary Tradition

The Sanzijing (Three Character Classic):

• Classic Chinese primer from Song Dynasty (宋朝)
• Used for children's education for 700+ years
• Three characters per phrase creates rhythm
• This text adapts the form for biblical content

Three-Character Phrase Pattern

• Each phrase = 3 characters
• Phrases grouped in pairs ( | separator)
• Creates natural rhythm for recitation

Key Character: 神

• Radical: 礻(spirit/worship)
• Appears frequently as subject of creation verbs
• Modern usage: 神话 (myth), 精神 (spirit)

Key Character: 造

• A creation/action verb
• Used throughout: 造地天, 造女男
• Modern usage: 创造 (create), 制造 (manufacture)

Key Characters: 天 and 地

Together: 天地 = heaven and earth (the world)

Key Characters: 光 and 暗

Paired in the text: 要有光 别于暗

Key Characters: 水 and 海

Classical vs. Modern Word Order

Why the difference?

• Classical Chinese prioritizes rhythm and rhyme
• Word order is more flexible
• Don't "correct" classical to modern!

Day 1: The Beginning

神 (God) + 起初 (in the beginning)
造 (created) + 地天 (earth and heaven)

Day 1: Before Light

• 混沌 (hùndùn) = chaos, formless
• 渊 (yuān) = abyss, deep waters
• 黑暗 (hēi'àn) = darkness

Day 1: Let There Be Light

• 要有 = "let there be" (command form)
• 别 (bié) = separate, distinguish
• 于 (yú) = from (classical preposition)

Day 1: Naming Day and Night

• 名 (míng) = to name (verb)
• 昼 (zhòu) = daytime
• 夜 (yè) = night
• 早晚 (zǎowǎn) = morning and evening

Day 2: The Sky

• 次 (cì) = second, next (sequence marker)
• 空气 (kōngqì) = air, atmosphere
• 称 (chēng) = to call, to name

Day 2: Separating Waters

• 区 (qū) = divide, distinguish
• 上下 (shàng xià) = upper and lower
• 诸 (zhū) = all, various (classical)
• 间 (jiān) = between, among
