3.NF.A.1: Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.
What you'll learn
- Partition a whole (circle, rectangle, or other shape) into a specified number of equal parts and explain why the parts must be equal
- Identify and name a unit fraction 1/b as one part when a whole is divided into b equal parts (e.g., 1/4 is one part when a whole is cut into 4 equal parts)
- Explain the meaning of the numerator and denominator in a fraction a/b - the denominator tells how many equal parts the whole is divided into, and the numerator tells how many of those parts are being counted
- Construct a non-unit fraction a/b by counting unit fractions (e.g., 3/4 means three copies of the unit fraction 1/4)
- Determine the fraction represented by a shaded region in an area model and shade a region to represent a given fraction
