Quick Review: What Is Half of Ten?

You already know: half of 10 is 5

  • Did you add ? No!
  • You multiplied:
  • The word "of" told you to multiply

Today we'll use this idea with all kinds of fractions.

Fraction Multiplication Word Problems | Lesson 1 of 1

The Word "Of" Means "Times"

When a fraction is attached to a quantity by "of", multiply:

  • "2/3 of 24 crayons" →
  • "1/2 of 3/4 cup" →
  • "3/4 of a 2 1/3-mile trail" →

Key question: "What fraction of what quantity?"

Grade 5 Math | 5.NF.B.6
Fraction Multiplication Word Problems | Lesson 1 of 1

Example: Two-Thirds of Twenty-Four Crayons

Maria has 24 crayons. She uses of them.

Tape diagram showing 24 divided into 3 groups of 8, with 2 groups shaded

  • Partition 24 into 3 equal groups → 8 each
  • Take 2 groups → 16 crayons

  • "Half of three-fourths" →

You drank liter.

Multiply or Add? Read Carefully

Problem Operation Why
of cup Multiply "of" links fraction to quantity
cup and cup Add "and/total" combines amounts

"Of" → multiplication
"And," "total," "altogether" → addition

Quick Check: Multiply or Add Here?

Problem: 30 students. play a sport. How many play?

Is this multiplication or addition?

Think about it before the next slide...

Now Let's Use Models to Solve

We can identify the operation — now let's use visual models to find and verify answers:

  • Tape diagrams → fraction × whole number
  • Area models → fraction × fraction
  • Tape diagrams → fraction × mixed number

The model is a thinking tool, not decoration.

Area Model: Two-Thirds of Three-Fourths Pizza

pizza left. You eat of what remains.

Area model showing 3/4 shaded vertically and 2/3 shaded horizontally with overlap of 6/12

  • Shade vertically, horizontally
  • Overlap = pizza

Tape Diagram: Fraction Times Mixed Number

You hiked of a -mile trail. How far?

  • Convert:
  • Divide into thirds: each third =
  • Take 2 thirds: miles

Your Turn: Draw a Model

Draw an area model for:

  • Shade in one direction
  • Shade in the other direction
  • What fraction is the overlap?

Try it, then advance for the answer...

Estimation Benchmarks for Fraction Products

Before multiplying, predict the answer's size:

Estimation benchmarks diagram showing three rules

  • Fraction < 1 times a quantity → product less than the quantity
  • Compare to : if the fraction > , the product > half the quantity
  • Both factors < 1 → product less than either factor

Five-Step Routine for Word Problems

For every word problem, follow this routine:

  1. Identify the operation — look for "of"
  2. Estimate the answer's size
  3. Write the equation
  4. Compute — convert mixed numbers first
  5. Interpret — units, simplify, reasonableness

Key Takeaways and Common Mistakes

"Of" means multiply — not add
Visual models verify equations and answers
Estimate first — catches errors early
Complete answers need number, units, and reasonableness

⚠️ Don't add when you should multiply
⚠️ The denominator divides — don't skip it
⚠️ Convert mixed numbers before multiplying
