What you'll learn

  1. Solve simple rational equations by multiplying by the LCD (least common denominator) and solving the resulting polynomial equation
  2. Solve simple radical equations by isolating the radical and raising both sides to an appropriate power
  3. Identify and discard extraneous solutions by checking all solutions in the original equation
  4. Explain WHY extraneous solutions arise for both rational equations (multiplying by zero) and radical equations (squaring can introduce new solutions)
  5. Recognize and state the domain restrictions for rational and radical equations (denominators ≠ 0, radicands ≥ 0 for even roots)
