What you'll learn

  1. Use physical objects (cubes, counters, fingers) to act out addition situations (putting together) and subtraction situations (taking away)
  2. Draw simple pictures to represent addition and subtraction situations
  3. Connect a concrete or pictorial representation to a verbal explanation (e.g., "I had 3 apples and got 2 more, now I have 5")
  4. Recognize that addition means combining groups and subtraction means removing from a group
  5. Begin to connect representations to expressions or equations using +, -, and = symbols
