Learning Objectives:
From Lesson 1:
Today we'll add:
Since percent means "÷ 100":
45% = 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45
The percent symbol tells you to divide by 100.
Method: Divide by 100 (move decimal 2 places LEFT)
45% → 0.45
Remove the % symbol, move decimal 2 places left.
Single digits need a placeholder zero:
8% = 0.08 (not 0.8!)
Percents can be greater than 100%.
200% of your money = double your money
Very small percents exist too:
0.5% is NOT the same as 50%!
Method: Multiply by 100 (move decimal 2 places RIGHT)
Convert each percent to a decimal:
Move decimal 2 places LEFT
Convert each decimal to a percent:
Move decimal 2 places RIGHT
Chunk 4: The percents you should memorize
Every value can be written three ways:
25% = 1/4 = 0.25
All three represent the same amount!
"The shirt is 50% off the $40 price"
50% = 1/2
Half of $40 = $20
Benchmarks make estimation fast!
"About 25% of students passed"
If there are 80 students:
Match each percent to its equivalent:
Always check: does my answer make sense?
25% = 25/100 = 1/4 = 0.25
You can now move fluently between all three forms.
Future lessons will cover:
Practice your conversions and benchmarks!
